4 Things to know about the Dakshineswar temple
Dakshineswar Temple is one of the most popular temples in Kolkata, West Bengal. Lots of wedding ceremonies take place in the banquet halls in Kolkata close to the Dakshineswar Temple. Here are some important facts of the temple:
1. Location
The Dakshineswar Temple is situated on the eastern banks of the Hooghly river (a tributary of Ganga), at a distance of 20km from central Kolkata. Some of the best restaurants in Kolkata are situated close to the temple offering mouth-watering delicacies.
2. Deity
The principal deity of the Dakshineswar Temple is Goddess Bhavatarini, a form of Goddess Kali. The main temple is flanked by 12 other small temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is another temple along the riverfront dedicated to Radha-Krishna. The famous priest Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa is associated with this temple.
3. History
The construction of the temple was initiated by Rani Rashmoni in 1847 though she couldn’t see its completion in 1855. It is believed that Rani Rashmoni while going on her pilgrimage to Kashi had a vision of Goddess Kali who instructed her to built this temple on the banks of the river Ganga.
4. Architecture
The temple has a traditional “Nava-Ratna” or nine spires style of Bengal architecture. The roof of the spires resembles with the Pirhas. The 3 storey structure rests on a high platform with stairs attached to it. Goddess Kali is placed in the Garbha Griha. There is also a Natmandir or dancing hall in front of the temple.
The Dakshineswar Temple is of great religious significance for Hindus and thus attracts hundreds of devotees especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays. It is considered one of the must-visit temples for Hindus.
