Chokkanathaswamy Temple of Bangalore at a Glance

Chokkanathswamy temple in Domlur, Bangalore is dedicated to deity known as Chokka Perumal, which is the other name for Hindu god Vishnu. It is one of the oldest temples in the city. • History: There are several spectacular decorative artworks and sculptures in the interiors of the temple. There are Tamil inscriptions on the doors of the temple, which states that the doors were donated by several notable people and kingdom during that time. One inscription dates back to 1270 AD, which states PoysalaViraRamanada made donations to the temple.

• Inscriptions inside the temple: There are many inscriptions inside the temple that describe Domlur as Tombalur, a type of flower. ChakravarthiPosalaviraramanathaDeva, the ruler during that time, has left instructions to temple authorities in many of the inscriptions. Other inscriptions read tributes and taxes paid by the people to the ruler of Vijayanagara empire during that time.

• Present day: The temple has been renovated several times to preserve its sanctity.  There are idols of Vishnu, Sridevi and Bhudevi are present in the Garbagriha of this temple. They are made by carving Shaligrama stone from Gandaki river in Nepal. However, the outskirts of the temple remain crowded and its quite difficult to find a parking space even.

• Timings: The temple is open to public from 6 am to 11 am in the morning and 5.45 to 8.30 pm in the evening, every day. Entry fees is not required to get in. Good hotels in Bangalore will provide you a homelike atmosphere while you visit the temple.
